UAA men perfect, women near-perfect in Hawaii cross country race

Different order, same result for the UAA men's cross-country team Saturday in Hawaii.

For the second week in a row in Oahu, the seventh-ranked Seawolves posted a perfect team score.

Henry Cheseto, a sophomore who is the reigning West Region champ, grabbed the individual victory to lead UAA to a sweep of the team titles at the Hawaii Pacific University Invitational.

A team must produce the top five individual finishers in the race to post a perfect score of 15 points, and the Seawolves did that and more Saturday – they boasted the top six finishers in the 8-kilometer men's race.

Cheseto set the pace in 25 minutes, 58.6 seconds for his first win of the season – he placed third in last week's season opener. He edged runner-up Dominik Notz by eight-tenths of a second.

They were followed by teammates Edwin Kangogo (26:18.8), Victor Samoei (26:28.2), Nathan Kipchumba (26:45.1) and Michael Mendenhall (26:53.2). Hawaii Pacific's Jacob Alplund interrupted the parade of Seawolves across the finish line in seventh place, and then came UAA's Philip Messina in eighth place (27:33).

Last week, Kangogo and Kipchumba placed first and second.

On the women's side, the 10th-ranked Seawolves flirted with perfection, scoring 16 points with a 1-2-3-4-6 finish.

Caroline Kurgat recorded her second victory in as many tries this season, winning the 5-K race in 18:15.9. Joyce Chelimo captured second in 18:18, Kimberly Coscia was third (18:42), Jessica Pahkala fourth (19:08) and Kaitlyn Maker sixth (19:14).

Denying the women a perfect score was Hawaii Pacific's Johanna Apelryd, fifth in 19:09.

Adding top-10 performances for UAA were eighth-place Mariah Burroughs and ninth-place Tamara Perez.
