UAA runner Cheseto bags GNAC honor

UAA sophomore Henry Cheseto, who Saturday won the individual title at the Hawaii Pacific Invitational for the second straight year, Monday was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's male Athlete of the Week for cross country.

Cheseto led the Seawolves to a perfect score – the top five finishers for the minimum 15 points – at the Invitational, where UAA's women also handily won a team title with 16 points.

Cheseto clocked 25 minutes, 58 seconds, on the 8-kilometer (5-mile) course to beat teammate Dominik Notz by one second.

Cheseto last season won the GNAC championship and West Region championship, and finished 23rd at nationals to earn All-America status.

UAA's men are ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region. The Seawolves women check in at No. 10 in the nation and No. 3 in the region. New region rankings will be unveiled Tuesday and new national rankings will be released Wednesday.

The Seawolves do not compete again until Oct. 10 at the Western Washington Classic in Bellingham.

The UAA men and UAA have both qualified for the national meet for seven straight seasons.
