Police ID Barrow man struck and killed by SUV near Merrill Field

Anchorage police have identified the Barrow man struck and killed Monday night by an SUV on Fifth Avenue near Merrill Field.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said Tuesday that next of kin have been notified for Nathaniel Olemaun Jr., 72. Olemaun died at the scene, just east of the Alaska Sales and Service dealership and a Holiday gas station, in the accident reported at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

"A preliminary investigation of the collision revealed that a 2009 Ford Edge was traveling eastbound on East 5th Avenue when it collided with a pedestrian that was crossing East 5th Avenue southbound," Castro wrote in a statement. "No citations or charges have been issued in the collision at this time."

At the scene, several police vehicles blocked the road, while a body covered in a white sheet lay in the street near the gas station.

Anchorage police Sgt. Mark Bakken said the driver contacted police and remained at the scene after the accident. The driver did not show any signs of intoxication, Bakken said.

The driver who struck Olemaun has been cooperating in the ongoing investigation, police said. The police Traffic Investigation Unit closed Fifth Avenue's eastbound lanes near Orca Street for several hours overnight Monday and reopened the road to traffic at about 2 a.m.
