Unbeaten UAA up one spot to No. 11 in D-II volleyball rankings

The UAA volleyball team, which has matched a school record for the best start to a season with 10 straight victories, on Monday moved up one spot in the national poll to again reach the highest ranking in program history.

The Seawolves are ranked No. 11 among Division II teams in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday.

UAA last week opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a sweep of two road matches, and this week plays two more league matches. The Seawolves travel to UAF (0-9, 0-2 GNAC) for a match Tuesday and entertain Montana State-Billings (0-9, 0-1 GNAC) on Thursday in their conference home opener at the Alaska Airlines Center.

UAA's 10-match winning streak is the third-longest in program history, shy of the 13 straight won by the 2009 GNAC championship team and 11 straight by the 1984 squad.

A Seawolves player on Monday won a GNAC honor for the third straight week. Senior outside hitter Katelynn Zanders of Anchorage, best known for her thundering kills, won the Defensive Player of the Week award after delivering 29 digs in UAA's two road wins. Zanders leads the conference in kills with 4.19 per set.

Previously honored were senior Julia Mackey as Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Kyla Militante-Amper as Defensive Player of the Week.

Though it still is early in the season, the Seawolves are on track to earn their sixth NCAA tournament appearance in the last seven seasons under eighth-year head coach Chris Green.
