Big day for Region III runners from Kodiak, Kenai, Homer, Seward

Kodiak and Kenai Central ruled the Class 4A competition and Homer swept the Class 1-2-3A titles Saturday at the Region III cross country championships at Colony High.

Michael Parnell and Keith Osowski placed first and second to lead the Kodiak boys to victory with 33 points. Wasilla edged Colony by one point, 67-68, to claim second place.

Parnell edged Osowski by one second to win the closest race of the day in 16 minutes, 22.9 seconds.

Kenai landed four runners in the top six of the girls race to win with 31 points, an effort led by the 1-2 finish of Riana Boonstra and Jaycie Calvert. Colony was second with 48 points.

Homer knocked off perennial powerhouse Grace Christian to take the 1-2-3A titles in dominating fashion. Homer's boys scored 30 points and the girls totaled 31 to hold off Grace Christian, which placed second in both team competitions.

Seward boasted both individual champions -- Hunter Kratz in the boys 5-kilometer race and Ruby Lindquist in the girls.

The top three Class 4A teams and the top four Class 1-2-3A teams will advance to next Saturday's state championships at Bartlett High.
