Home on stilts in Angoon collapses in rough Southeast Alaska weather

A house built on stilts in the Southeast Alaska village of Angoon collapsed in bad weather Friday, nearly falling into the ocean.

A village public safety officer responded to the home on Beaver Trail Street at 8:40 p.m. Friday.

The officer found that the house, built on stilts above the beach, had collapsed. Only a "large boulder" kept it from "falling into the ocean," the dispatch said.

The one occupant of the home was treated for minor injuries. Power and water lines were secured.

High winds and heavy rains from a storm that pummeled Southeast Alaska on Friday were a factor in the collapse, troopers said.

Stormy weather is expected to continue Sunday in parts of Southeast Alaska, thanks to a deep low-pressure front packing high winds, according to National Weather Service Juneau station meteorologist Wes Adkins.
