Worker freed from conveyor belt in Chugiak industrial accident

A worker at a Chugiak concrete property was injured after his clothing became trapped in a conveyor belt Friday morning, responders said.

Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department acting captain and former chief Virginia McMichael said responders who arrived at ready-mix supplier Klondike Concrete, at 17625 Old Glenn Highway, found the man waiting in the company's office shortly before 10 a.m.

"We were initially dispatched for a man trapped," McMichael said. "They initially said there were no injuries, but when we got there co-workers had already freed his arm from the machine, so he was transported to (Providence Alaska Medical Center) with some pretty severe arm injuries."

McMichael said the man's wounds were non-life threatening, and primarily included soft-tissue damage. It wasn't clear at the scene whether he suffered contusions or broken bones.

"It appeared that his arm wasn't actually caught, but his clothing was -- and the force of the twist is what caused the injuries," McMichael said. "It could have been a lot worse."

Jennifer Rivera, an office administrator at Klondike Concrete, said staff were still assessing the incident Friday morning.
