Woman killed, children injured in Western Alaska house fire

A house fire in Western Alaska killed a Chevak woman and injured two children Thursday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.

At 10:48 a.m., Bethel-based troopers were notified of the fire in Chevak, a community of almost 1,000 located in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

Emergency responders were assisting people from the home, but a woman, identified as 39-year-old Denise Jones of Chevak, was unresponsive when she was removed from the burning residence, troopers said in an online dispatch. Efforts to resuscitate Jones were unsuccessful, troopers said.

Two children were also injured in the fire and taken by medevac to Anchorage and Bethel for treatment.

Troopers and the State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

Jones' remains are being sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy.
