Project provides boat access to Chena River in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS — A project to stabilize the Chena River in Fairbanks is expected to allow for further development in the city's downtown area.

The multistage project includes a non-motorized boat launch that is being constructed on private property downstream of the Barnette Street Bridge, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported. The owner of the property is John Jackovich, who also owns the Big I bar nearby.

Jackovich is partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Festival Fairbanks and the North Shore Bike Path project, DNR, DEC and the Tanana Valley Watershed Association for the project.

A vital part of the project has included the restoration of the Chena River. The north side of the river has been stabilized using root balls and willow brush to reinforce the bank against erosion and create salmon habitat.

The North Shore Bike Path that runs along the river will continue downstream by the boat launch and connect with Pioneer Park.
