'Person of interest' still sought after fatal Eagle River shooting

Four days after a man was shot and killed outside a Carrs grocery store in Eagle River, Anchorage police still want to speak with a "person of interest" in the case -- as well as other unidentified witnesses.

Police said Tuesday they haven't yet spoken with 26-year-old Aaron Nathaniel Trejo. He has been sought ever since another 26-year-old, Spencer Christian Ballenger, died outside the Carrs grocery store on Business Boulevard just before 2 a.m. Friday.

"Detectives are also looking for witnesses who were seen in a dark blue sedan with tinted windows who were present in the parking lot at the time of the shooting," police spokeswoman Anita Shell wrote in an update on the case.

Shell said Tuesday that no sign of Trejo has been found. She called on him to speak with investigators voluntarily, but also called on anyone sheltering him to stop doing so.

"We need to talk to him in connection with the homicide," Shell said. "We're thinking somebody knows where he's at -- somebody's hiding him or he's hiding very well, and somebody's not coming forward."

As of Tuesday, police haven't identified any suspects in the case -- including Trejo.

"At this point in time we haven't charged him with anything, so he can't be called a suspect," Shell said. "We just want to talk to him."

Trejo is also wanted on an arrest warrant for failure to appear on a third-degree assault charge, after submitting bail of $500.

Anyone with information on Trejo's whereabouts should call police at 907-786-8900 or contact Crime Stoppers at either 907-561-STOP or its website.
