Anchorage woman found dead on Northwest Alaska snowmachine route

An Anchorage woman reported overdue on a snowmachine trip between two Northwest Alaska villages has been found dead, Alaska State Troopers said Tuesday.

Troopers said 31-year-old Nichael Snell reportedly began the 7-mile trip between Kobuk and Shungnak, villages about 130 miles northeast of Kotzebue, on Saturday night.

According to a Tuesday dispatch, troopers and Northwest Arctic Borough search crews began looking for her at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday.

"Volunteers recovered Snell adjacent to her snowmachine deceased midway between the two villages," troopers reported.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email further details on what happened weren't immediately available Tuesday afternoon.

"We haven't been able to respond to investigate," Peters said.
