Aces beat Eagles on late goal, win series

For the first time in more than a month, the Aces won consecutive hockey games, and it happened in comeback fashion.

Alaska recovered from a two-goal deficit early to beat the Colorado Eagles 4-3 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.

In what turned out to be the game-winning goal, a wild shot ricocheted off Colorado goaltender Tate Maris' glove, the Aces crashed the net, and Stephen Perfetto navigated the chaos and slapped it in with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

The Eagles pulled Maris' with 1:08 left, but Alaska sealed the victory when winger Justin Breton took the puck and blew up the right wing, avoiding icing and allowing time to expire.

The victory gave the Aces (8-12-3) the series win over the Eagles (8-12-2) -- Alaska earned five of a possible six points -- and it marks their first back-to-back victories since grabbing wins Oct. 24 and Oct. 30.

But the game didn't start in Alaska's favor. The Eagles scored first on a goal from Joe Zarbo just over 12 minutes into the game — a far cry from Friday's lightning quick start.

Colorado added to its lead on a Trent Daavettila goal in the final minute of the first period and went into the locker room up 2-0.

The Aces responded with fireworks in the second period. Breton got Alaska on the scoreboard, tucking in a backhander three minutes in. It was Breton's ninth goal of the season to lead all Aces.

Later in the period, Alaska tied and took the lead at 3-2 on two goals just over a minute apart. Defenseman Gleason Fournier scored a power-play goal midway through the period followed by a Tommaso Traversa goal on a backdoor pass from winger Peter Sivak. Traversa's goal tied him with Breton for the team lead.

Sivak is yet to score in his two games back with the Aces, but the former fan favorite has assisted on three goals.

The third period started slow with numerous whistles before the Eagles tied the game on a power play before Perfetto furnished the game-winner.

Maris, a backup goaltender for the Eagles who had only one professional start before the series, exceeded expectations during Colorado's win Wednesday, but the Aces got the better of him Friday and Saturday.

The teams each had 22 shots on goal with Alaska's Steven Summerhays getting 19 saves to Maris' 18.

Summerhays only started four of Alaska's first 17 games, but he continues to play since Troy Redmann aggravated his back last month.
