Doc Larson Roundball Classic: With no time on clock, Barrow Whalers nab title

Barrow's desperation shot at the buzzer led to despair for the Coronado Cougars in Saturday night's championship game at the Doc Larson Roundball Classic in Wasilla.

Travis Adams of Barrow was fouled when he launched a halfcourt shot as time expired. He stepped to the foul line and made all three free throws to lift the Whalers to a thrilling 78-77 win over the Cougars of Henderson, Nevada.

The game was packed with drama – 21 lead changes, 10 ties, an improbable finish – and stellar performances.

Adams, a sophomore, played all 32 minutes and finished with 30 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Kamaka Hepa, another Barrow sophomore, delivered 11 points and 15 rebounds for his third straight double-double in the eight-team tournament. He added five assists and five steals before fouling out.

Roy Henry Snow also boasted a double-double for the Whalers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Trevor Thomas knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to 16 points.

Two players racked up double-double for Coronado. Kennedy Koehler, whose foul on Adams set up the game-winning free throws, had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Jake Desjardins had 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Trey Hurlburt provided another 23 points for the Cougars.

Juneau boys 69, Wasilla 57

Juneau rode Kaleb Thompson's double-double to a victory over Wasilla in the third-place game.

Thompson racked up 31 points and 13 rebounds for the Crimson Bears, who forged a 28-18 halftime lead.

Treyson Ramos added 13 points, four assists and four steals for Juneau.

Daniel Headdings provided 18 points for Wasilla before fouling out, and teammates Isaac Houck and Aeron Milliron combined for 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Lincoln boys 68, West 63

Domination on the boards delivered Lincoln a narrow win over West in the fourth-place game.

The Cardinals of Portland, Oregon, outrebounded West 40-24 behind a 12-rebound performance from Jayden Dewer. Dewer added a dozen points to finish with a double-double.

Lincoln's Rasheed Butler scored all 15 of his points from 3-point range.

Providing a spark for West was Da'Zhon Wyche, who recorded 24 points, five assists and three steals. He was good on four of his seven shots from 3-point range.

Ambridge boys 51, Colony 46

Seventh-place went to Ambridge, a Pennsylvania team that put three players in double figures to slip past Colony.

Aaron Hilzendigger (15 points), Nick Campalong (13) and Roman Shell (12) paced the Bridgers.

Colony was led by Anton Chamblee, who dropped in 12 points, and Alex Nygard and Tyler Boyer, who had 10 apiece.

Wasilla girls 57, Lincoln 51

Leya Depriest tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks to guide Wasilla to the girls championship.

The Warriors led 47-34 after three quarters and withstood a strong finish by the Oregon team.

Wasilla outrebounded Lincoln 33-24, an effort that included eight boards from Kellie Lindeman and five from McKenna Dinkel, who provided 13 points.

Reed Hazard led the Cardinals with 14 points and four steals.

Coronado girls 46, Barrow 43

The Coronado Cougars survived a bad first quarter to post a come-from-behind win over Barrow.

Coronado, of Henderson, Nevada, trailed 11-4 after the first eight minutes. The Cougars secured the win by outscoring Barrow 16-12 in the final quarter.

Haley Tyrell topped Coronado with 16 points. Kuutuuq Danner posted a double-double for Barrow with 10 points and 12 rebounds and added five steals.
