Heavy snow could make travel rough south of Girdwood

Forecasters say a strong storm is expected to make travel difficult on Friday and Saturday for areas south of Girdwood and the eastern Kenai Peninsula.

The National Weather Service is predicting the storm will dump as much as two feet of snow through Turnagain Pass and near Girdwood, with winds up to 55 miles an hour.

The weather service predicted the snow to develop Friday morning, becoming heavier in the afternoon. Meteorologist Joe Wegman said in a phone interview at 1:30 p.m. Friday that the snow "is still just getting there."

"The forecast has always been for the most snow to occur this evening, and that looks to be right on track," he said. "The best advice for travelers is: 'Don't, during that time.'"

A winter storm warning issued by the weather service for western Prince William Sound, including Whittier, Seward, and Moose Pass, says visibility is expected to be "near zero" at times.

The weather service doesn't expect "nearly the impact" along the Seward Highway between Girdwood and Anchorage, Wegman said.
