Small plane crash closes parts of downtown Anchorage

A small aircraft crashed into a downtown Anchorage office building early Tuesday morning, killing one occupant.

The crash has caused several closures downtown.

• Two blocks of downtown Anchorage -- West Third and Fourth avenues from I Street to L Street -- are closed to traffic. Officials expect that closure to last for several hours;

• Anchorage Fire Department officials said power to the area was shut down because the plane hit an electrical transformer as it crashed. Power to about 600 Municipal Light and Power customers was affected, but a spokesperson said power to all but eight customers had been restored;

• Offices of the state departments of Law and Corrections along with the District Attorney's office, which are housed in the affected Brady Building and another building at 310 K Street, are closed according to a release from the Alaska Department of Administration. The Brady Building reopened later Tuesday, though the Carr Gottstein Building remained closed.

• Snow City Cafe, at 1034 West Fourth Street notified patrons by a sign that it was closed due to the power outage.
