Downtown Anchorage streets closed for New Year's Eve celebration

Streets in downtown Anchorage are closed Thursday in connection with a New Year's Eve celebration, the Anchorage Police Department said.

Fifth Avenue is closed from G to C streets, and Sixth Avenue is closed from G to E streets, Anchorage police said, and will remain closed until about 9 p.m.

Police ask motorists to use alternative routes.

The streets are closed as part of the Anchorage Downtown Partnership's New Year's Eve event which will include music, street performers and food trucks.

Fireworks are set to begin at 8 p.m., and discount parking will be available downtown, according to the organization's website.

Police also reminded residents that fireworks are illegal in Anchorage. The fine for illegal use of fireworks is $300, and those who ignite them may be held civilly responsible if the fireworks cause damage.
