Troopers injured in two New Year's Eve incidents

Alaska state troopers were injured in two incidents on New Year's Eve, including a highway chase that reached speeds around 70 mph near Fairbanks, according to reports from the agency.

The injuries to troopers were not described in troopers news releases.

The Elliott Highway chase near Fairbanks happened after 9 p.m. when Jay Nelson, 49, refused to stop after troopers tried to pull him over, troopers say. Spike strips deflated one tire but didn't stop him, according to a news release.

"The vehicle traveled at speeds upwards of 70 miles per hour and would often travel in the opposing lane of traffic," troopers reported.

Nelson, from Fox, was stopped at Mile 19 of the Elliott Highway. That's when Nelson put his car in reverse, hitting the patrol car and causing a minor injury to the trooper, according to the release.

Troopers reported that Nelson did not have permission to drive the car and was driving with a revoked license.

He was taken to the Fairbanks jail. Charges included first-degree failing to stop for a peace officer, first-degree vehicle theft and a felony charge of driving under the influence.

In Wasilla, shortly after 7 p.m., a trooper was injured after Geoffery Hansen, 27, resisted arrest, troopers reported.

The incident occurred on Copper Creek Road after troopers pulled over a sedan for "equipment violations."

Hansen, the passenger, was trying to swallow "drug paraphernalia," troopers say.

"Hansen failed to comply with the trooper's verbal commands and forcefully resisted arrest, injuring the trooper," troopers reported.

Hansen, who is from Palmer, was taken to the Mat Su Pretrial Facility and held on $2,500 bail. He faces charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and fourth-degree assault.
