Mt. Edgecumbe boarding school searches for new superintendent

Alaska's education department is looking to hire a superintendent for Mt. Edgecumbe High School, a state-run boarding school in Sitka that enrolls about 430 teenagers in grades 9 to 12.

The school's current superintendent, Bill Hutton, will leave at the end of June. Hutton had come out of retirement to work at the high school when Troy J. Thayne, who went by "J," resigned in January 2015 after just six months on the job. Hutton had previously worked as the school's superintendent for two years, starting in 2008, said Les Morse, deputy education commissioner.

"We knew he was going to be leaving," Morse said on Tuesday. "He really just came back to help us out."

The new superintendent will start on July 1, 2016. The annual salary ranges from about $103,000 to $122,000, depending on experience, Morse said. Applicants must have at least a master's degree in education and at least five years' experience working in education, according to the state's recruitment notice.

What's unique about working as the superintendent at Mt. Edgecumbe, Morse said, is that "it's 24/7." The school has about 400 beds for students who live across Alaska. Some of its students live in Sitka, he said.

"You're making sure they have positive, healthy activities all the time," he said.

The state education department is searching across the country for the new superintendent, Morse said. It is accepting applications by email and mail.
