No foul play suspected in death of Anchorage inmate

The Anchorage jail inmate who died at a local hospital Sunday morning was a young woman who had been held for less than a week, according to the Alaska Department of Corrections.

A Monday statement from the department identified 24-year-old Kellsie Green as the inmate who died at Alaska Regional Hospital at 10:38 a.m. Sunday. She had been booked into the jail on Jan. 5.

The department said Monday that Green had been remanded to the jail Jan. 5 on an arrest warrant for failing to perform community work service, associated with a 2012 case in which Green pleaded guilty to driving with a revoked or suspended license.

In a Monday dispatch, Alaska State Troopers said that jail staff reported finding Green unconscious in her cell Sunday morning. CPR was performed on her and she was taken to the hospital, where she died.

"No foul play is suspected and investigation is continuing," troopers wrote.

DOC spokesperson Sherrie Daigle didn't have further details on what led up to Green's death, pending further investigation by both the department and troopers.

Correction: An initial version of this story inaccurately said Green was held on a fourth-degree count of misconduct involving controlled substances, not failing to perform community work service.
