Freshman leads UAA ski team with third-place alpine finish

Freshman Maria Gudmundsdottir finished third in the women's slalom Monday at the Montana State Invitational to top UAA finishers in a pair of college ski meets in the Lower 48.

Gundmundsdottir's result, the best by any UAA skier in any discipline this season, was among four top-10 finishes for Seawolves athletes – two top-10's for alpine racers and two for nordic racers – at the Montana State Invitational and the Utah Invitational. UAA skiers totaled 18 top-20 finishes – nine for nordic athletes and nine for alpine athletes.

Gundmundsdottir, of Iceland, clocked 1 minute, 49.95 seconds for two slalom runs at Big Sky Resort. Alix Wells finished 20th for UAA.

On the men's side, UAA's Sean Alexander finished 19th and Hughston Norton finished 20th.

In Sunday's giant slalom, Alexander led the UAA men in seventh place, Norton took 17th and Tony Naciuk finished 19th. Charley Field led the Seawolves in the women's giant slalom in eighth place, and Gundmundsdottir finished 19th.

UAA sits sixth among eight teams in the Montana State Invitational, which continues with nordic competition in a week.

At the Utah Invitational on Sunday, senior Mackenzie Kanady led UAA finishers with her eighth place in the women's five-kilometer freestyle. UAA's Casey Wright took 17th.
