Roads slick in Anchorage and Mat-Su, Weather Service warns

Drivers in Anchorage and the Mat-Su were warned of potentially slippery roads Tuesday morning amid a combination of precipitation and near-freezing temperatures.

In a special weather statement, the National Weather Service's Anchorage office said residents of the region could expect slick roads and sidewalks as a result of the morning's conditions.

"A mixture of snow, rain and freezing rain is falling this morning," forecasters wrote. "Those traveling should be prepared for hazardous driving conditions."

The Weather Service's forecasts for Anchorage and the Mat-Su call for the freezing rain to become snow by Tuesday afternoon, with up to 1 inch falling amid high temperatures in the lower to mid-30s.

As of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Anchorage police dispatchers had received reports of six vehicles in distress since midnight.

Luis Ingram, a meteorologist with the Weather Service's Anchorage office, said the immediate weather pattern behind Tuesday's conditions could produce snow into Wednesday morning.

"We have some moisture coming in from our south and southwest -- it's riding in along the Cook Inlet, and it's producing some light precipitation across the area," Ingram said. "We are expecting it to linger through tonight, with snow continuing as we go into Wednesday."

Ingram said a second wave of moisture, headed north into the Anchorage area, could produce more snowfall Wednesday afternoon and evening.
