Ice, snow and crashes tie up Anchorage roads

Icy roads in Anchorage caused trouble for some drivers Thursday and crashes closed two roads briefly.

Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Renee Oistad said as of 7:30 p.m., 57 non-injury crashes, 12 vehicle crashes with injuries and 39 vehicles in distress were reported Thursday.

One of the crashes involved a school bus on a Goldenview Middle School bus route Thursday morning. APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said no injuries were reported. Twenty-eight children were on board at the time of the crash, Anchorage School District spokeswoman Heidi Embley said.

According to Embley, the students mentioned bumps and bruises. She could not confirm if anyone was taken to the hospital.

A two-car crash closed part of the Glenn Highway in the early afternoon and sent four people to the hospital. Oistad said speed and weather conditions were factors in the crash.

"A red Mazda traveling outbound on the Glenn Highway lost control, crossed over the center median into the inbound lanes, and was struck by a gold Ford Explorer," Oistad wrote. "The red Mazda had a mother and two children inside -- all of whom were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Explorer contained just one person who was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

Police said on Twitter that the crash had initially closed the highway inbound and blocked one outbound lane. All lanes of the Glenn were reopened by about 1:20 p.m.

Police warned drivers use caution Thursday, as slick conditions from snowfall overnight Wednesday continued to make highways treacherous.

Another crash happened on Boniface Parkway near Northern Lights Boulevard. The multi-car wreck closed Boniface for 30 minutes and sent one bicyclist to the hospital.
