Marrs tops small field in Gin Gin 200

Wade Marrs of Wasilla, the eighth-place finisher in last year's Iditarod, topped a small five-team field to win the Gin Gin 200 sled dog race last weekend.

Marrs, 25, passed fellow Iditarod veteran Zoya DeNure in the final leg to win in 33 hours. DeNure was 11 minutes back, followed by Alexandra Rochat in 37:11 and Noah Pereira in 37:51.

The Gin Gin, which began in 2005, evolved from a "women only" race to a race for both sexes that typically attracts more than two dozen racers. This year, there were two other races the same weekend — and some musher were just coming off difficult run in the Kuskokwim 300 in southwest Alaska. The race began in Paxson and followed a right of way along the Denali Highway.
