Two injured in shooting near downtown Anchorage

Two people were injured in a shooting near downtown Anchorage early Saturday morning that at one point involved bullets being fired from a moving car, police say.

About 3:09 a.m., an Anchorage police sergeant heard gunshots near Fourth Avenue and Gambell Street, police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said in a statement. Another officer saw a dark-colored pickup truck run a red light and speed away from the area shortly after, she said.

Around the same time, a patrol officer saw a white four-door sedan heading east on Ninth Avenue past Karluk Street. A dark silver sedan pulled in behind the white sedan, Oistad said.

"A male in the silver car was seen hanging outside of the vehicle, with his upper body above the roof (while the vehicle was in motion), firing shots at the white car," Oistad wrote. "The officer lost sight of both vehicles."

Another cop spotted the silver sedan, and police began a pursuit east toward the Glenn Highway, Oistad wrote. She said other vehicles didn't yield to the police cars, which slowed the officers down.

She said that by the time officers caught up with the sedan, it had crashed near the Bragaw Street and Glenn Highway interchange. The two people in the car had run away, she said.

Police set up a perimeter and dispatched search dogs to look for the suspected shooters, but with no success, Oistad said.

While the search was going on, a hospital called to report that two injured people had been dropped off, Oistad said.

A man had a single gunshot wound to his lower back, and a woman had a gunshot wound to her leg, Oistad said.

She said both injuries were not life-threatening, and the two victims were "very uncooperative" with police.

No arrests had been made as of late Saturday morning, Oistad said, She said police were following up on leads, but weren't releasing suspect information. She also said police hadn't yet established what led to the gunfire.
