Permanent Fund board plans meeting on budget legislation next week

The Alaska Permanent Fund board will meet next week for overviews of three pieces of legislation aimed at closing the state's budget gap that would also affect how the fund's earnings are spent.

The board on Monday announced a meeting at the Atwood Building in Anchorage at 1 p.m. on Feb. 19.

Board members are expected to discuss Senate Bills 114 and 128 and House Bills 224 and 245.

Two of those, SB 128 and HB 245, were proposed by Gov. Bill Walker as part of his plan to restructure the Permanent Fund into a holding tank for oil and investment revenue.

HB 224 was sponsored by Rep. Mike Hawker, R-Anchorage, and proposes to withdraw money from the Permanent Fund based on an average of the fund's value rather than based on its investment returns. SB 114, sponsored by Sen. Lesil McGuire, R-Anchorage, proposes a similar shift.

The board meeting will include public comment; no action will be taken.
