Erik Bjornsen wins 50-K national title, Packer and Patterson seize overall Super Tour titles

Olympian Erik Bjornsen of the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center captured the national championship Saturday in the men's 50-kilometer classic race that wrapped the Super Tour in Vermont, where two Anchorage skiers -- Eric Packer and Caitlin Patterson -- won the overall Super Tour titles.

Bjornsen, 24, clocked 2 hours, 43 minutes, 56 seconds in Craftsbury to earn the title over runner-up Tad Elliott by 1:40. Bjornsen won $1,200.

APU's David Norris finished third (2:47:32), Packer of APU took fifth (2:49:56), APU's Scott Patterson was sixth (2:50:01) and APU's Alex Treinen was 10th (2:55:07).

Packer, 25, took the Super Tour overall title and Patterson, 23, finished third overall.

On the women's side, Caitlin Patterson wrapped up the Super Tour title with her third-place finish in the women's 30-K classical race. She clocked 1:31:05, which left her 71 seconds behind winner Jessie Diggins, the Olympian who this season won a World Cup race.

APU's Rosie Brennan finished sixth (1:33:01) and teammate Chelsea Holmes was seventh (1:33:09).

Patterson won the women's overall Super Tour title and Holmes finished third in the standings.

On the junior side Saturday, APU's Thomas O'Harra also won a national title, taking the men's 20-K classical race in 1:03:49. He finished nearly three minutes ahead of the runner-up.
