Man shot, dog killed in apparently random Anchorage Hillside attack

A man was injured and his dog was killed in an apparently random shooting at their Anchorage Hillside home on Wednesday, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., the victim opened the front door at his house on Sultana Drive after hearing the doorbell, police said in a statement Wednesday evening. The victim saw a man walking away with a package, but the man turned around when the door opened. The man said, "I have a package for you," then pulled out a gun and shot the victim, Anchorage police said.

The victim was able to run inside the house. The suspect also went inside and fatally shot the victim's pet German shepherd, according to the police. The suspect then drove away. Police would not describe the suspect's vehicle.

The victim was taken to a hospital with one gunshot wound to the torso that was not life-threatening, Anchorage police said. His mother, who was sleeping in the house, was not hurt.

APD said the shootings appeared to be random; no items appeared to have been stolen from the house.

Five police vehicles and the police department's crime scene RV were parked along Sultana Drive in front of the home about two hours after the shooting. Officers walked to and from the house, elevated above and set back from the road.

Police described the suspect as a white or mixed-race Hispanic man who stood 6 feet tall with a medium build and short dark hair. He is believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s and was wearing baggy clothes when the shooting happened.

Anchorage police are asking residents of the area to call them with any information on the suspect or the crime at 786-8900.
