Spike strips and crash end 130-mph Sterling Highway chase

Troopers used spike strips Sunday to end a Sterling Highway chase on the Kenai Peninsula during which two Anchorage men allegedly hit speeds of well over 100 mph.

Driver Jesse Skjegstad, 19, and passenger Justin Thomassen, 22, were in an Audi sedan that Alaska State Troopers tried to pull over for speeding near Mile 70 of the Sterling Highway at about 3:30 p.m., according to a dispatch.

"The vehicle sped up southbound on the Sterling, reaching speeds of over 130 mph," troopers wrote. "AST was successful in deployment of spike strips near Mile 87 (of the) Sterling Highway. The vehicle shortly afterward went into the ditch and rolled at least one time before landing on its wheels."

Both men were treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, with Skjegstad later arrested for failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer, third-degree assault and reckless driving. Thomassen -- who allegedly gave a false name to troopers -- was arrested on two outstanding warrants and charged with violating terms of the felony probation he was under.

Skjegstad and Thomassen were ultimately remanded to the Wildwood Pretrial Facility.
