Man critically injured in Midtown Anchorage shooting

A man was in serious condition after being shot multiple times in a Midtown Anchorage parking lot Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened in an empty lot on Fairbanks Street between an RV park and an empty business building.

The Anchorage Police Department crime scene truck arrived at the scene shortly before 8 p.m. The lot was cordoned off with crime scene tape as officers searched the area.

Anchorage police Sgt. Michael Kerle said the RV park residents called when they heard gunshots.

The shooting victim was in surgery and an unknown number of suspects were still at large, Kerle said. Officers were canvassing the area for video surveillance, he said.

RV park resident Ron Patton said he was sitting at home when he heard three shots.

He said he went toward the noise with a gun for protection and saw a black car stopped close to the lot. The vehicle's occupant appeared to be looking back at the victim and the suspect sped off when he saw him approaching, Patton said.

Patton, an emergency responder, said he then checked the victim, whose heart rate was steady but breathing was a little irregular.

"There were no exit wounds that I could see," he said.
