UAA's record-setting Chelimo honored by GNAC

UAA senior Joyce Chelimo, who owns the fastest women's times in NCAA Division II outdoor track this season in the 10,000 meters and 5,000 meters, on Monday was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's women's track athlete of the week.

Chelimo last Friday at the Mt. Sac Relays in California blistered the 5,000 in a UAA-record 15 minutes, 59.55 seconds, the fastest time in Division II this season by more than five seconds.

Chelimo who in April won at the Stanford Invitational, clocked a UAA-record 33:14.41 in the 10,000 and her mark also leads Division II this spring.

Both Chelimo's 5,000 and 10,000 times are automatic qualifiers for the Division II nationals. Chelimo on Saturday at the Beach Invitational in California ran the 1,500 meters for the first time. Her time of 4:32.78 is a provisional qualifier for nationals.

Chelimo in the indoor season finished runner-up at nationals in the 5,000 and placed sixth at 3,000 meters, giving her two All-American honors.

She also was an All-American in cross country in November, finishing seventh at nationals.
