Dog dies, driver hurt in Kenai crash

A collision between two SUVs on the Kenai Peninsula Saturday morning left a dog in one vehicle dead and the driver of the other injured, Alaska State Troopers said.

Dispatchers were first informed of the wreck, at Karluk Avenue's intersection with Kalifornsky Beach Road, at about 10:40 a.m. Saturday. Troopers said in a Sunday dispatch that the drivers involved were 26-year-old Phillip Evans of Nikiski and 21-year-old Angela Smith of Kenai.

"Investigation revealed (Evans) was traveling southbound in a 2005 Chevy Tahoe when (Smith), who was driving a 2002 Suzuki Vitara, failed to yield while turning left onto Kalifornsky Beach Road," troopers wrote. "Evans' vehicle then struck Smith's vehicle."

The dog that died was in Evans' vehicle. Smith was taken to Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment.

Troopers said Smith received multiple citations in the crash, which left both SUVs disabled.
