Juneau man dies after vehicle-pedestrian collision

A man hit by a car in Juneau Friday afternoon succumbed to his injuries hours later, according to local police.

Police said in a statement that they received multiple 911 calls reporting that the man, 77-year-old Joseph Patrick Rafferty, had been struck on Willoughby Avenue. Officers, accompanied by Capital City Fire and Rescue medics, responded to the scene.

"Officers found that a 1991 gray Ford Explorer operated by a 20-year-old female struck (Rafferty)," police wrote.

Rafferty suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital, where he died.

No citations were initially issued in the collision. Rafferty's next of kin have been notified.

In a second Juneau death Friday, police found an Alaska man's body near the Brotherhood Bridge over the Mendenhall River at about 3 p.m. that afternoon. No foul play is suspected in 47-year-old James Peter Wool's death, which remains under investigation.
