Celebrate local foods at UAF on Wednesday

Craig MedredAlaska Dispatch

Living in Fairbanks and in love with local food? The University of Alaska Fairbanks is hosting its second annual Food Day this Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Wood Center on campus.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the public can check out food, agriculture and healthy-living exhibits.

At 11 a.m., two university deans will face off in the “Surf vs. Turf” challenge -- The Midnight Sun Chefs Association will judge between halibut cheeks prepared by School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences Dean Michael Castellini, and reindeer meat, prepared by School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences Dean Carol Lewis.

Hungry folks should arrive early, as a Taste of Alaska buffet featuring Alaska-grown food will begin at 11:30 a.m., lasting until the food runs out. From grass-fed beef to sockeye fillets, UAF Dining Services will be creating tasty dishes for the public to enjoy.

At noon, satiated food day participants can enjoy a game of Food Jeopardy.

UAF’s Food Day is exactly a week before National Food Day, celebrated Oct. 24, which seeks to promote safe, healthy foods, reduce disease related to poor diet, alleviate hunger, and protect the environment.

Food Day is free and open to the public.
