Expelled from Russia, jet ski adventurers back in Alaska

The jet skiers who survived a sprint across the Bering Strait only to be arrested and turned away have made their way back to friendlier shores.

The six-man team led by "Dangerous Waters" reality TV producer Steven Moll were in the beginning stages of a planned 5,000 mile journey from Nome, Alaska to Taiwan last week. Once across the international dateline, they arrived in the Chukotka region and were greeted by an armed Russian military patrol.

New details about the mens' detention and how they plan to salvage their watery sojourn were published Wednesday in the New York Times.

Moll and his media spokesperson told the Times the group retreated from Russia with a military helicopter on their heels. Although team members had visas, the trouble seemed to be with entering the country in one of its well-guarded military zones. The guards that came to investigate their headlights as they approached shore were as surprised as the adventurers were to see border-patrol agents in an armored tank rolling up. The men were treated well and allowed to visit a few museums, but ultimately were unable to proceed.

Though no longer detained, they would have to retreat to Alaska and find a new route to their destination.

Plan B? After enjoying the sights of Alaska, navigate the Northwest Passage and head for Iceland.
