FAA administrator goes to jail for drunken driving

The chief administrator for the nation's airways had himself a wild weekend -- so wild, in fact, that his employment status with the federal government may now be in question.

Jerome Randolph "Randy" Babbitt, Federal Aviation Administration chief, is on administrative leave after being arrested in Fairfax City, Va., for drunken driving, according to the Washington Post's Crime Scene blog.

The arrest happened Saturday night a few miles from Babbitt's home. According to the Post, Babbitt, 65, was driving alone and cooperated with local police, who transported him to an adult detention center, where he was charged with DUI and then released.

Babbitt, the article notes, requested his own leave from duty, and deputy FAA Administrator Michael Huerta will assume command of the federal agency, which is part of the Department of Transportation.

The White House and Transportation Department did not learn of Babbitt's arrest until Monday afternoon, East Coast time, according to the Post.
