'On the Ice' achieves fundraising goal

With a full day left in the Kickstarter fundraising effort, Barrow filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean and the other creators of "On the Ice" -- a feature-length drama made entirely in Alaska with an Inuit cast -- have achieved their goal of $80,000 to fund the movie's U.S. distribution. On Wednesday, writer and director Okpeaha and producer Cara Marcous posted elated thank-you videos to the site's page.

Kickstarter relies on donations from the public to encourage artistic endeavors. Last week, the film had achieved only about half of its $80,000 goal after almost a month of fundraising, but an outpouring of support helped it achieve its goal with time to spare. The fundraising page remains open until Thursday afternoon and the project can go above and beyond its goal, all of which will help the filmmakers in their distribution -- which includes advertising, the creation of a trailer for the film, and a presence in theaters and Netflix, according to the website.
