Juneau area flood advisory in effect

A flood advisory is in effect for Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River until 6 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service originally issued a "watch," but late Thursday it was bumped up to an "advisory" after the release of water from the Mendenhall glacier dam became substantial.

According to Juneau's KINY-radio, a local meteorologist said water is expected to flood parts of Lake Spur Road and possibly some properties in the area.

Ed Grossman, the Recreation Program Manager for the U.S. Forest Service in Juneau, told KINY, "They're adjusting their operations in response to the rising water (and) there's a chance of flooding on their West Glacier Spur Road in the early morning hours Friday and some of their lower lying camp sites at the Mendenhall Lake Campground."

As a result, the West Glacier Trail is closed, as well as parts of the Mendenhall Lake Campground. Officials are keeping an eye on West Glacier Spur Road for any sign of water activity that may lead to closure.
