Alaska will be among the next several states that marijuana decriminalization supporters target in efforts to legalize recreational use. That's according to an announcement from the executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project.
The project was instrumental in Colorado's ballot measure, passed in November and signed into law by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper in December, that made recreational pot use as legal as alcohol or tobacco.
"Alaska voters have traditionally been more supportive of (taxing and regulating marijuana) than voters in any other state," Marijuana Policy Project executive director Rob Kampia said in a recent column.
The Marijuana Policy Project identifies seven states where it plans to pursue recreational pot legalization between now and 2016: Alaska, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Rhode Island. Kampia said Alaskans can expect a ballot measure to decriminalize marijuana on the 2014 primary election ballot.
