Microbrew lovers: Get ready to celebrate Alaska Beer Week

Feeling winter-weary, in need of a reason to celebrate, or just a really good drink? Alaska Beer Week kicks off on Friday, offering daily events in Anchorage and Fairbanks for microbrew afficionados.

The week centers around the Great Beer & Barley Wine Festival in Anchorage, Jan. 18–20.

But there will be activities all week. Alaska Beer Week writes: "Many cities now host beer weeks — Denver, Seattle, Portland, Boston, San Diego and San Francisco to name a few. In 2011 it became evident that Alaska — not just Anchorage, due to logistics as well as brewer community spirit — (should) designate a 10-day beer week to celebrate craft beer. … From traditional beer dinners to yoga to special keg tappings to beer + cupcake pairings to gluten-free beer tastings to ice curling. The number of exciting ways to experience craft beer in Alaska is radically growing."

In Anchorage, activities will be held at a variety of local restaurants and breweries. In Fairbanks, events will be held daily at the new HooDoo Brewing Company downtown. A full schedule of events is available at Alaska Beer Week.
