A Nunavut hamlet's polar bear invasion

According to Nunatsiaq News (Iqaluit), hunters along the coast of Nunavut are reporting seeing many more polar bears than usual this winter, and are starting to need extreme measures to protect important food caches from the marauding bears. A long-time wildlife officer in Igloolik, a village in Nunavut's High Arctic, told Nunatsiaq that he and others this year have seen more sows with multiple cubs and more males than usual, and that the bears are looking healthy and well-fed. Many reports also say the bears have been raiding food caches at a high rate, and have begun associating humans with sources of food. Some take all these fat bears as a sign that melting sea ice isn't affecting bears as much as is feared, but the sea ice stayed around all summer in Igloolik, and still the bears came into the community.
