Alaska's fisheries continue to rise in value, according to new state Labor Department report. The dockside value of the state's fisheries reached $1.6 billion last year, with the Aleutian and Pribilof Island region the biggest part of that at $473 million, said a broadcast from KUCB.
Southcentral had the second largest haul. Earning $265 million, that region employed nearly 8,000 permit holders and crew members.
Southeast had the most fishermen, about 9,000 fishermen and a dockside catch value of about $200 million.
Growing fastest? Bristol Bay, with earnings of $170 million in 2010 leaping from about $100 million five years earlier.
Kodiak was noted for its stability. The island's been home to about 800 permit holders for the past five years, with about 2,500 crew members.
