Wine of the week: 2009 Lai Lai Bio Bio Valley Pinot noir

Years ago you couldn't imagine pinot noir coming from anywhere but Burgundy, France. Today, California is searching for a new style, and the Oregon pinots are out of sight. New Zealand is coming on fast, so you can expect some amazing things soon. But Chile? Come on! Lai Lai is way down south in the Bio Bio district. It's cooler down there and perfect for growing pinot. The 2009 Lai Lai Bio Bio Valley Pinot noir is a tender little thing. Strawberry fruits herbs and what I like to call pinot noir velvet are all there. The wine has moderate alcohol content, so you can drink a bit and still be in there. The mouth is medium weight, well fruited and dry, lingering a bit before saying goodbye. Overall it's a pleasant drop to have with your fresh salmon. Costs about $12.
