New Year's crash near Wasilla leaves 1 dead, 2 seriously injured

A head-on crash on Knik-Goose Bay Road near Wasilla early New Year's Day left one person dead and two others with life-threatening injuries.

Pyotr Kudryn, 57, of Wasilla was pronounced dead after the crash, state troopers said.

Darin Cleveland, 24, of Wasilla was driving south in the wrong lane when he crashed head-on into Kudryn's car, troopers said.

Two passengers with Cleveland, Ella Williams, 26, and Gertrude Ivanoff, 25, were transported to Providence and Mat-Su Regional hospitals with life-threatening injuries, troopers said.

The two, from Wasilla, were not wearing seatbelts, troopers said.

Police responded at 6 a.m. to the crash near Vine Road.

Troopers are investigating the incident.

Cleveland was treated for minor injuries at Mat-Su Regional Hospital.
