The White House on Thursday will host athletes, parents and military leaders to talk about how to keep young people safe from concussions in sports.
The NCAA and the Department of Defense will announce a $30 million study aimed at filling gaps in research on concussions, and the NFL will announce an additional $25 million grant over three years for partnerships on youth sports safety, said Carole Johnson of White House Domestic Policy Council in a call with reporters on Wednesday.
Steve Tisch, chairman and executive vice president of the New York Giants and partner at Escape Artists Productions, will announce a $10 million grant to UCLA for concussions prevention and treatment. Part of the funding will be used to start work on a national concussions database, Johnson said.
Jay Carney, the press secretary, said the idea for the concussions summit came out of conversations he had with President Barack Obama about their children and sports.
