Letter: Homeless failures

Just about everybody has an opinion of what to do with the homeless population: the mayor, the Assembly, even the editorial board at the Anchorage Daily News. It seems like the only people not being asked their opinion are the homeless population themselves.

When inhumane psychiatric facilities started closing their doors in the 1950s, there was no step-down plan or facilities for the more serious cases. A person would either be locked up in a psychiatric facility or released to the streets. There should be intermediate facilities to help people transition into society and community care. What the state and city are doing to solve the homeless crisis today is failing in a spectacular fashion. Until more people affected by the homeless crisis are brought to the table, the city’s effort to solve the homeless crisis will continue to fail.
