Letter: Integrate church and state

I disagree with Elise Patkotak. Separating church from state is not the solution. It’s the problem.

Two examples:Jerry Falwell Jr. once told The Washington Post that Jesus did not tell the Romans how to run their empire. Wrong. Jesus intended his teachings to apply to everyone. Governments must treat people, especially the most vulnerable, with justice.

That includes our government. A “pro-life” Catholic once told me killing unborn babies by bombing pregnant women is a matter not of morality but of “foreign policy.”

In my experience, the “Christian right” shows more interest in posting the Ten Commandments in public places than in obeying the commandments in public policy.

True, politicians want to impose their beliefs on us, but those beliefs are political, not moral; they’re designed not to obey God, but to appeal to their political base.
