Letters to the Editor

Letter: Doppelgänger?

Where to begin? I find myself completely perplexed by the letter to the editor submitted by Debra Riner and published by the ADN on March 6, regarding my husband Bill Popp.

Let’s just start with the facts, shall we? From March of 1983 until April of 2007, Bill and I lived in Kenai. In the early 2000s, Bill worked for the Kenai Peninsula Borough, not the Municipality of Anchorage or in the private sector, as the author stated. Bill was hired and began his employment as president and CEO of the Anchorage Economic Development Corp. in April of 2007 and held that position until he resigned to run for mayor in September 2023. Bill Popp has never been an employee of the Municipality of Anchorage. Given those basic facts that are easily confirmed, there is no way that Bill Popp participated in any contract or wage negotiation meetings with the city of Anchorage attorney as stated by Debra Riner.

I am going to be charitable and assume that Debra Riner has confused Bill with some other individual. Unless Bill has a doppelganger here in Anchorage that we are unaware of, I would suggest that she takes the time to do one’s due diligence pertaining to the facts. Her lack of fact-checking speaks volumes about this person as a credible source.

In addition, if Bill Popp were able to clone and/or teleport himself during this timeframe, I assure you, his “honey-do” list would have been twice as long.
