Letters to the Editor

Letter: A hometown reminder

While attending a recent University of Alaska Anchorage basketball game, I was fortunate enough to witness a ceremony of a student enlisting with a branch of the U.S. Armed Services. The sworn oath of office included a promise to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Many of us witnessed an example of such a domestic threat when viewing live coverage on Jan. 6, 2021 of insurrectionists, urged on by Donald Trump, attacking our Capitol. Because of his leadership in this insurrection, Trump was later impeached, but the Senate failed to indict him. Among those who failed to vote to impeach Trump and protect our constitution from domestic threat was our U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan — the same senator who is supposedly an ardent supporter of the military, but failed to take then-President Trump to task for embarrassing our military and intelligence services when kowtowing to Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in 2018.

Trump’s capitulation to Putin has reverberated again recently when he disparaged NATO allies while stating he would let Russia do “whatever the hell they want” pertaining to NATO. What happened to the morals and spine of the Republican Party?
