This could be the end of an error. Gov. Mike Dunleavy keeps talking about how Alaska’s young people are important, and that education is important. His actions do not bear this out. Since the current oil tax structure went into effect, it has cost Alaska around a billion dollars per year in tax revenue. (Yes, that is billion, with a “B” and a bunch of zeros.)
The tax plan that used to fill our coffers and fuel our economy was replaced with the current tax plan in 2013. All the Republicans and three Democrats voted for the change. The oil companies are doing great, but Alaska is not.
The Legislature should override the veto of education funds and then get us a decent price for our oil. Years ago, I saw a sign that an elderly woman had posted in her yard. It said, “Question Authority - Verify Answers.” I think that is still good advice.
