Photos: An hour in the life of an urban moose

Events that would send a moose in the wilderness areas galloping away are pretty much ignored by an Anchorage moose. An hour spent with a moose on the west side of Anchorage shows a diversity of encounters with the people and animals of Alaska's biggest city.

The hour started out with the moose grazing on a lawn next to a street with buses and cars passing by 10 feet away. Some drivers stopped to shoot photos with their phones as the moose continued across the street to a park to feed on trees.

Dogs are a constant part of an urban moose's life. Many dogs just bark from yards, while a few that are running loose come up for a closer encounter. This brief meeting ended well for moose and dog. The dog seemed to be content with running back and forth and barking and the moose just stood still watching the dog and only momentarily raised its hackles. Then it was back to feeding, and of course giving a ride to a magpie. All in all, just another day in the life of an urban moose.
